Environmental Policy

We take our responsibility towards the environment seriously here at Miles Tool and Machinery Centre. Wherever possible we work to ensure that our impact on the environment is reduced by improving our energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions and considering our use of resources carefully, for example through use of recycled packaging from sustainable forests. We are also pleased to be able to offer our customers the chance to recycle their old electrical items through the WEEE Directive.

What is WEEE?

The Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive requires countries to maximise separate collection and environmentally friendly processing of these items. In the UK, distributors (including retailers) must provide a system which allows all customers buying new electrical equipment the opportunity to recycle their old items free of charge. Those establishing their own take-back scheme must as a minimum offer all customers buying new electrical equipment free take back of their old electrical equipment on a like-for-like basis.
Find more information on WEEE recycling, and locate your local recycling centre, at www.recyclenow.com.

Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) ‘Take Back’ Scheme

You can now recycle your old electricals with us. If you’re buying a new electrical item, we will recycle your old one for free. For example, if a new drill is purchased, we will accept your old drill to dispose of in an environmental way if returned within 28 days of the purchase of the new item. Any returns will be accepted either in person in our shop or via the post. However, the customer is responsible for any postage costs incurred in the process. All electrical returns for recycling should be packaged securely and addressed to:

Recycling Department (WEEE)
Miles Tool and Machinery Centre
Unit 18 Oxford Road
Yeovil
Somerset
BA21 5HR

On receipt of your item we will log it on our records and then dispose of it environmentally. Unwanted electrical equipment is the UKs fastest growing type of waste. Many electrical items can be repaired or recycled, saving natural resources and the environment. If you do not recycle, electrical equipment will end up in landfill where hazardous substances will leak out and cause soil and water contamination – harming wildlife and also human health.

To remind you that old electrical equipment can be recycled, it is now marked with a crossed-out wheeled bin symbol. Please do not throw any electrical equipment (including those marked with the crossed out wheeled bin symbol) in your bin.

WEEE

Batteries

Batteries should never be put in household waste or recycling bins; we also help our customers by accepting used batteries when purchasing replacements and making sure that they are disposed of correctly.

Waste packaging

As a company, where possible we are committed to the reuse of waste packaging, cardboard and pallets and recycle all unusable cardboard, glass, toner cartridges, spare parts and metals. Most of the packaging we use to dispatch goods can be recycled. If you visit our store, we are very happy to provide a plastic carrier bag if you need one. Please reuse our bags as often as possible and when you have finished with it, please ensure that it is disposed of responsibly.

Miles Tool and Machinery Centre endeavour to reduce waste wherever possible by thinking about the environmental impact of our actions. Non essential documents and emails will not be printed. We will ensure that all printing and photocopying is done on double-sided paper. Scrap paper will be used in printers, fax machines and for taking messages.

In addition...

Our company ethos and eco credentials ensures that we aim to only sell tools where spare parts are available, encouraging sustainability through repairing rather than throwing away. We also support the quality ideal of only selling well known branded power tools and accessories that outlive the cheaper alternatives and increase the life of the tool.

Miles Tool and Machinery Centre will seek to minimize the use of energy in its activities. For example, lights and equipment will be switched on only when needed and not out of routine.

Our environmental performance will be regularly monitored and we are continually seeking ways to ensure continuous improvement in this field through ongoing staff training, performance targets and regularly policy reviews.
